  • Nina Simone: Celebrating the Enduring Legacy of a Musical Icon

April 21 marks a significant day in the world of music, as it commemorates the passing of the highly influential and remarkable artist, Nina Simone.

Twenty-one years have passed since the world bid farewell to this extraordinary singer, pianist, and civil rights activist. In this blog post, we pay tribute to Nina Simone’s remarkable life and enduring legacy, celebrating her profound impact on music, society, and the fight for equality.

The Early Life of a Musical Prodigy:
Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon on February 21, 1933, in Tryon, North Carolina, Nina Simone discovered her love for music at an early age. Her remarkable talent as a pianist was evident from the beginning, and she was granted a scholarship to study classical music at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. However, faced with the realities of racial discrimination, Simone’s dreams of becoming a classical pianist were not easily realized.

    The Transformation into Nina Simone:
In the 1950s, Eunice Waymon adopted the stage name Nina Simone to perform in nightclubs and bars to support her family. Her distinctive voice, combined with her virtuosic piano skills, captivated audiences and garnered attention from record labels. Simone’s unique blend of jazz, blues, and soul became her signature style, setting her apart from her contemporaries and establishing her as a trailblazer in the music industry.

The Voice of the Civil Rights Movement:
Nina Simone’s music was not limited to entertainment; it became a powerful tool for social activism. Deeply affected by the racial injustices of the time, she used her platform to advocate for civil rights and equality. Songs like “Mississippi Goddam” and “To Be Young, Gifted and Black” became anthems for the Civil Rights Movement, reflecting the struggles and aspirations of African Americans in their quest for freedom and equality.

    Musical Brilliance and Genre Defiance:
Simone’s versatility as an artist was unparalleled. She fearlessly explored various genres, seamlessly blending elements of jazz, gospel, folk, and classical music into her repertoire. Her renditions of popular songs like “Feeling Good,” “I Put a Spell on You,” and “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” showcased her ability to infuse these songs with her unique style, making them unmistakably hers.

A Troubled Personal Life and Legacy:
Behind the scenes, Nina Simone faced numerous personal challenges. Her struggle with mental health issues, coupled with the pressures of fame and activism, took a toll on her well-being. Despite her personal struggles, Simone’s legacy remains an indelible mark on the music industry. Her music continues to inspire and resonate with audiences worldwide, and her influence can be seen in the work of countless artists across generations.

Twenty-one years after her passing, Nina Simone’s impact on music and society powerful. Her unwavering dedication to using her voice and artistry as catalysts for change continues to inspire artists and activists alike. As we remember and celebrate the life of this extraordinary musician, let us honor her memory by continuing to fight for equality for all, using the power of art.

  • John Coltrane: Exploring the Mathematics of Music

My music is the spiritual expression of what I am: my faith, my knowledge, my being.
    – John Coltrane

The word “genius” gets thrown around a bit in the world of music. Someone is called a genius if the sell a million records, or if they put on a successful Super Bowl halftime show… etc. In the case of John Coltrane, though, there seems to be a pretty solid collection of arguments in favour of calling him a musical genius.

I would argue that along with a higher than average working memory/recall, creativity is a factor in musical genius. What really sets John Coltrane apart, for me, though is his ability to explain and apply his theories about music.

Talking about music is like dancing about architecture.

    Unknown

Yes, I’m aware some feel talking about music is a lost opportunity to play it. Sometimes though, I think it’s useful, maybe even required to reflect on music to get the fullest experience possible. I love a lot of John Coltrane’s music, but I’m finding the more I explore the ideas behind his writing and playing, the more I appreciate what he created. I’m inspired by the possibilities of setting up a platform to then “run” through as the moment carries me.

I’m thinking of IMPROVISING here as traveling with a map, but no itinerary.

    John Coltrane’s Tone Circle
    (The Coltrane Circle)

So, if music is the journey, then maybe this is the map… “John Coltrane’s Tone Circle.”

But what is it? What does it mean?

The Coltrane Circle: A Mathematical Masterpiece
Many musicians quickly see the “Coltrane Circle,” looks a lot like the well-known “Circle of Fifths,” but there are some interesting changes…

    1. Circle of Fifths: The outer ring of the Coltrane Circle represents the circle of fifths, which is a fundamental concept in music theory. It illustrates the relationship between the 12 chromatic pitches and their corresponding key signatures. The circle of fifths helps musicians understand the progression of chords and harmonies.
    2. Hexatonic Scales: The inner rings of the Coltrane Circle depict hexatonic scales. Hexatonic scales are six-note scales that Coltrane incorporated into his compositions to create unique melodic and harmonic structures. These scales provided him with additional tonal options and allowed for more complex musical expressions.
A clarified version by Corey Mwamba from his article “Coltrane’s Way Of Seeing.“

The outer ring shows the “Hexatonic” (6-Tone) or “Whole Tone” Scale of C:

    (C – D – E – G♭ – A♭ – B♭ – C).

The inner ring displays the Hexatonic scale of B:
    (B – D♭ – E♭ – F – G – A – B).

This is where Coltrane’s Tone Circle starts to become interesting.

One of the features of the “Circle of Fifths” is that, like a “Colour Wheel,” it shows tones that a close together and “work well together” in a traditional sense, or clash. Coltrane’s innovative here was to play with the idea that “working well together” and “clashing” can be analysed and played with to create new and interesting sounds.

In any scale, the fourth and fifth notes of the scale or called “perfect” tones. In fact, the I – IV – V (1, 4, 5) chord progression, is probably the most used in all of “western” music. What Coltrane shows with these small circles, is the fact, that the four, and five tones of any note in the circle of fifths also show up as the notes directly above or below that notes “polar opposite” on the circle.

For example, if we look at C at the top of the circle, and then look to the bottom of the circle, we find G flat (Gb). Starting at sea, and rising forward tones (C D E F) we find that the fourth of C is F. The fifth of C, then, is G.

Once again, looking at the bottom of the circle, we see that F and G are the notes directly above or below G flat.

Adapted with red circles from Roel’s World. See references below.

In terms of application, this means that by moving from a note on the circle of fifths, to any “semitone” up or down, the next step in a melody or chord progression, can easily be what is otherwise considered the “polar opposite” of any note!

I realize some of you might have read that last section, and thought… “So What?!”(as in, “Who cares?… not the Miles Davis classic!)

The thing here is, the idea of “polar opposites” was at one time, so ingrained in western music theory, that the flat fifth (ie. C to Gb) was considered the devils interval! It was generally considered unwise, or even unholy to use this interval, also referred to as the “tritone.” Applying the “Coltrane Circle,” we can now see a clear and simple way to apply this “devil’s interval” into whatever music we’d like! Examples of this can be found in Coltrane-penned pieces such as “A Love Supreme.”

Integration of Mathematical Ratios: Theory and Practice

While Coltrane’s mathematical approach to music is evident in the Coltrane Circle, it’s important to note that his theoretical innovations were deeply integrated into his expressive and improvisational performances, resulting in unique and innovative jazz compositions.

I don’t want to give the impression that John Coltrane only applied this mathematical approach to music. Some of his pieces applied the Fibonacci sequence, and the famous quote “Coltrane Changes” in “Giant Steps” or based on descending into rules of a third. (More on this in a future post.)

As much as I have spent time, explaining the Coltrane Circle of Tones, my goal in this post is to try to illustrate what is meant when we refer to “the mathematics of music” and analyse John Coltrane’s music as a “prime” example of that.

Please note, this is very much a condensed analysis of this topic. For much greater detail, I recommend having a look at JOHN COLTRANE’S TONE CIRCLE by “Roel”: https://roelsworld.eu/blog-saxophone/Coltrane-Tone-Circle/

Happy 84th birthday, Herbie Hancock! May your music continue to inspire and captivate audiences for generations to come.

An excerpt from Herbie Hancock’s Facebook page…

In 1973, Herbie Hancock wanted to create something new – something lighter, funkier: something you could dance to. “There was this need to take some more of the earth and to feel a little more tethered,” he’s said. Taking a few musical cues from Sly &The Family Stone, Curtis Mayfield, and The Pointer Sisters, Herbie rounded up drummer Harvey Mason, saxophonist Bennie Maupin, percussionist Bill Summers, and bassist Paul Jackson, and he got to work.

The album they made together, Head Hunters, wasn’t just one of the best albums of Herbie’s career-it’s one of the greatest albums of al time, according to Rolling Stone. It was a smash hit, becoming one of the best-selling jazz albums in history. By bringing a funk sensibility to jazz, Herbie and the Headhunters, as they christened themselves, turned jazz into a pop phenomenon, serving up their marvelously complex rhythm experiments in an easy-to-understand package. The album’s styling and groove made it an immediate dance-floor favorite; hip-hop producers have been mining Head Hunters for samples ever since.

Now, fifty years later, Herbie reunites with all of the original players from the Head Hunters recording for the first time since 1973: Harvey Mason, Bennie Maupin, and Bill Summers, plus bassist Marcus Miller, who fills in for the late Paul Jackson. This will be the band’s only appearance, so don’t miss your chance to experience one of the greatest groups in jazz history.

  • Remembering Jim Steinman Who Died On This Day, April 19, 2021

I have to admit, I’ve become a bit obsessed with Jim Steinman’s career. I have been a fan of Meatloaf since my earliest memories of music, but until I started research for an Our Mind on Music (OMoM) episode about the classic 1977 album, “Bat Out of Hell,” I had no idea how interesting and varied the story of that album is, and how much of Steinman’s career was tied to its development, starting a full decade before!
With this in mind, I have decided to limit this post to only the elements of Jim Steinman that I see has having a specific link to the 1977 Meatloaf album, “Bat Out of Hell.” There is SO much more to the story though. Don’t be surprised if future OMoM posts and/or podcast episodes delve further into Jim Steinman’s incredible career.

Before I go further in sharing information about Steinman’s career though, I feel like I have to mention https://jimsteinman.fandom.com/wiki/Jim_Steinman_Wiki and https://jimsteinman.com/. These two sites have been absolutely instrumental in preparing this post, as well as my preparations for the related podcast episode which you can find on YouTube here: ———————–

A Legacy of Music and Theater
James Richard Steinman, a renowned American composer, lyricist, and record producer, left an indelible mark on the music industry with his diverse and captivating body of work. Born on November 1, 1947, Steinman’s creative genius spanned multiple genres, including adult contemporary, rock, dance, pop, musical theater, and film scores. His collaborations with iconic artists such as Bonnie Tyler and Meat Loaf produced timeless hits that have resonated with audiences for decades. Steinman’s contributions to music and theater continue to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide.

Steinman’s songwriting prowess was exemplified in his collaborations with Bonnie Tyler and Meat Loaf. He penned the epic album “Bat Out of Hell,” which remains one of the best-selling albums in history. This groundbreaking work showcased Steinman’s ability to fuse elements of rock, pop, and theater into a cohesive and emotionally charged musical experience. Additionally, he wrote and produced “Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell” and Tyler’s “Faster Than the Speed of Night.”

Throughout his career, Steinman crafted chart-topping singles that became instant classics. Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” Air Supply’s “Making Love Out of Nothing at All,” Meat Loaf’s “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That),” and the Sisters of Mercy’s “This Corrosion” are just a few examples of his exceptional songwriting talent. Steinman’s ability to create powerful and emotionally rich compositions was evident in each of these songs.

While Steinman’s collaborations with other artists garnered significant acclaim, he also released his only solo album, “Bad for Good,” in 1981. This album showcased his singular vision as a musician and further solidified his reputation as a masterful composer.

Beyond his contributions to popular music, Steinman made a significant impact on the world of musical theater. His career began in this realm, and he was involved in various productions throughout his life. Steinman’s creative journey began during his senior year at Amherst College, where he wrote the book, music, and lyrics for “The Dream Engine” in April 1969. This satirical-dystopian musical served as an independent study project and demonstrated Steinman’s early flair for storytelling.

Motifs, lyrics, and monologues from “The Dream Engine” found their way into many of Steinman’s later compositions. Notably, the lyrics “turn around bright eyes” from “Total Eclipse of the Heart” can be traced back to the song titled “The Formation of the Tribe” in “The Dream Engine.” These connections highlight the continuity and evolution of Steinman’s creative vision.

Another significant project in Steinman’s career was the musical “Neverland,” which he had been developing since 1974. Inspired by his earlier work on “The Dream Engine” and J.M. Barrie’s “Peter Pan,” “Neverland” showcased Steinman’s ability to weave captivating narratives through music. While the musical never received a full production, three songs from it—”Bat Out of Hell,” “Heaven Can Wait,” and “The Formation of the Pack” (later retitled “All Revved Up With No Place to Go”)—became part of Meat Loaf’s groundbreaking album “Bat Out of Hell.”

Despite facing initial rejection, Steinman and Meat Loaf persevered and eventually released “Bat Out of Hell” in 1977. The album’s success was unprecedented, reaching millions of listeners worldwide. Its impact was felt not only through record sales but also through its theatrical live performances. Steinman’s composition “Bolero” (a.k.a. “Great Bolero’s of Fire”) became a staple of his live shows, further solidifying his reputation as an extraordinary composer and performer.

In 2006, Steinman collaborated with Steven Rinkoff to form The Dream Engine, a music performance group. They produced studio recordings and held live shows in New York City, showcasing songs such as “What Part of My Body Hurts the Most” and “Speaking in Tongues.” Although this project has not been active in recent years, it stands as a testament to Steinman’s ongoing commitment to artistic innovation.

One of Steinman’s most notable achievements in recent years was the musical adaptation of “Bat Out of Hell,” aptly named “Bat Out of Hell: The Musical.” The production premiered in 2017 at the Manchester Opera House and went on to captivate audiences in London, Toronto, and New York City. Featuring songs from the “Bat Out of Hell” albums and other recordings from Steinman’s career, the musical brought his timeless compositions to life on stage. A cast recording album was released, preserving the incredible performances of the original cast.

Jim Steinman’s contributions to music and theater will forever be cherished. His ability to create emotionally charged compositions and tell captivating stories through his work is a testament to his artistic genius. Whether it was through iconic albums like”Bat Out of Hell” or his involvement in musical theater, Steinman’s impact on the industry is undeniable. His songs continue to resonate with audiences, and his legacy lives on through the timeless music he created. James Richard Steinman will be remembered as a visionary composer and lyricist who pushed the boundaries of musical expression and left an enduring mark on the world of music and theater.

  • Billie Holiday – Born April 7, 1915

Billie Holiday – Born April 7, 1915: Billie Holiday, born Eleanora Fagan, stands as one of the most influential jazz singers of the 20th century. Her unique vocal style and emotive performances made her an icon in the music industry, and her impact on music still resonates today.

Holiday’s voice was distinctive and immediately recognizable. She had a raspy, smoky quality to her voice that was both powerful and vulnerable. Her phrasing was unique, and she had a way of bending and stretching notes that gave her performances a sense of intimacy and emotion.

“Lady Day” was born in Philadelphia in 1915 and grew up in a troubled home. She began performing in nightclubs as a teenager and was discovered by jazz producer John Hammond in 1933. She recorded her first hit, “Riffin’ the Scotch,” with Benny Goodman’s orchestra in 1934.

“Riffin’ the Scotch” with Benny Goodman’s orchestra (1934)

Billie Holiday was one of the first African American women to achieve success as a jazz singer, and her success paved the way for other black women in the industry. She was also one of the first jazz singers to write her own songs, and her compositions have become classics in their own right.

Holiday’ songs often dealt with themes of love and heartbreak, but she did not shy away from singing about social injustice. She is known for her powerful performances of songs like “Strange Fruit,” a haunting ballad about lynching in the American South. The song was controversial at the time, but it has since become a powerful symbol of the civil rights movement.

Billie Holiday helped to shape the face of jazz with her unique vocal style and emotional performances helped to define what jazz is and what it could be. She was a pioneer in the industry, and her legacy continues to inspire musicians today.

“Billie Holiday makes you hear the content and intent of every word she sings–even at the expense of her pitch or tone. Billie is the one that touches me the deepest.” – Joni Mitchell

From the book: Joni Mitchell by Mark Bego

Billie Holiday’s impact on music cannot be overstated. Her unique vocal style and emotional performances helped to define the genre of jazz, and her legacy continues to inspire musicians today. She was a pioneer in the industry and a strong voice in the fight for civil rights. She refused to perform at segregated venues and was an outspoken advocate for racial equality. Her activism helped to bring attention to the injustices faced by black Americans, and her legacy as a civil rights icon is just as important as her legacy as a musician. Her impact on music and on society as a whole will be felt for generations to come.

    Honoring Glen Campbell’s Legacy
As the tenth anniversary of Glen Campbell’s album “Ghost on the Canvas” approached, Dave Kaplan of Surfdog Records sought to commemorate Campbell’s legacy in a unique way. Inspired by Natalie Cole’s successful duet album with her late father, Kaplan envisioned a posthumous project that would bring together music icons to sing alongside Glen Campbell’s original vocals.

The album was produced by Julian Raymond, who had previously worked with Glen Campbell on his album, “Meet Glen Campbell.” As producer, Julian Raymond, was charged with the responsibility of ensuring the quality and integrity of Glen Campbell’s legacy.

    Reimagining the Original Tracks
“Duets” is a reimagining of Glen Campbell’s 2011 album “Ghost on the Canvas” that offers a blend of incredible musical talents and a heartfelt homage. The duets on the album showcase a deep appreciation for Glen Campbell’s music and legacy. The album boasts an impressive array of artists collaborating with Campbell on songs from the original album. Among the notable contributors are Eric Church, Dolly Parton, Sting, Elton John, Carole King, Brian Wilson, and Eric Clapton, to name just a few.Eric Church and Dolly Parton, representing the country music scene, lend their voices to “Hold On Hope” and “A Better Place,” respectively. Rock veterans such as Sting, Carole King, Brian Wilson, and Eric Clapton contribute their talents to reimagine Campbell’s original tracks, including “Ghost on the Canvas,” “There’s No Me… Without You,” “Strong,” and “Nothing But the Whole Wide World.”

Each artist brings their unique style and musical prowess to the table, creating a diverse and captivating collection of duets.

    Some Surprises Too…
One of the standout tracks on the album features Elton John, who lends his voice to “I’m Not Gonna Miss You,” a song first heard in the documentary “Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me.”

The collaboration between Elton John and Glen Campbell adds another layer of emotional depth to the album, showcasing the profound connection between two musical legends.

A personal favourite of mine is, “The Long Walk Home,” featuring Hope Sandoval. Not only is this a beautiful duet, but it is also a rare treat to hear Hope Sandoval’s voice on record again.

    https://youtu.be/LV7z12rXejE?si=QSPn9ElVZ5axOlnKi

The album also includes musical contributions from Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins), Chris Issak, Wendy Melvoin (Prince and the Revolution), Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick), Steve Hunter (Lou Reed), The Dandy Warhols, Chris Chaney, Jason Faulkner Jr., Kim Bullard, Josh Freese (The Foo Fighters), Vinnie Colaiuta, Marti Rifkin, Dick Dale and Tim Pierce.

Each artist brings their unique musical styles and talents to the album, creating a rich and varied collection of duets with Glen Campbell. Each collaboration adds a distinct flavor to the songs, resulting in a captivating and memorable musical experience.

One artist/band included has especially piqued my interest… punk band, X… Honestly, I had no idea who “X” were. I had a look around, and the best introduction I could find was on “Rock and Roll True Stories.” . If you’re curious, as I was, this is a quick, yet thorough introduction to the band.

    https://youtu.be/iJ5RaPj7drQ?si=ExkvKUuOQ4SpzWDx

I’m really curious to find out how X became connected with Duets,” and I really look forward to hearing what they add to “Any Trouble.” In the meantime, here’s Glen Campbell’s original version of the song:

    A Labor of Love
The creation of “Glen Campbell Duets” was a labor of love for all involved. The artists recognized the importance of preserving Glen Campbell’s musical legacy and paid tribute to his unique vocal style and country twang. Some artists sang to the same backing tracks as the original album, while others contributed entirely new tracks, resulting in a seamless blend of old and new.

I suppose not everyone loves the idea of posthumous albums, and not all such albums are created equal. In this case though, I believe Glen Campbell’s “Duets” album stands as a touching testament to the enduring impact of his music. The album not only celebrates Glen Campbell’s rich musical legacy, but also brings together an amazing lineup of artists who pay homage to his talent and add their own, individual style to the project. I do hope “Glen Campbell Duets” will help fans like me celebrate Glen Campbell’s music as well as inspiring some new fans to explore his music, now and in the future.

  • The Enduring Impact of Seals and Crofts: An Almost Forgotten Legacy?

The Enduring Impact of Seals and Crofts: An Almost Forgotten Legacy?

Some of my earliest musical memories include the music of Seals and Crofts. Still, somehow, they seem to be often overlooked in the annals of music history. While they may not have reached the pinnacle of mainstream fame, I believe their contributions to music deserve recognition. In this blog post, let’s take a look at the legacy of Seals and Crofts, and explore the question of whether they should be included in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Seals and Crofts emerged as pioneers of the laid-back singer-songwriter style that defined the soft rock sound of subsequent decades. The music they created is a blend of mellow melodies and introspective lyrics that resonated with audiences of the 60s and 70s and helped shape what we might refer to today as soft rock or possibly even yacht rock.

Beyond their musical contributions, Seals and Crofts were part of a musical lineage that spanned generations. The band included England Dan (brother of Seals) and John Ford Coley, as well as the Humming Birds, forming a multi-generational family of musicians. This familial connection added depth and richness to their artistry, highlighting their shared passion for creating music.

Seals and Crofts also played a pivotal role in raising awareness of the Baha’i faith, to which they were devoted. With a sense of missionary zeal, they utilized their concerts as opportunities to spread the teachings of their faith. This unconventional approach to merging music and spirituality showcased their commitment to something larger than themselves, leaving an enduring spiritual legacy within the world of music.

While “Summer Breeze” may be their most recognizable hit, their other songs have also garnered significant acclaim and remain well-regarded today. Tracks like “Diamond Girl,” “Get Closer,” “Hummingbird,” “I’ll Play For You,” and “You’re The Love” all achieved chart success and continue to resonate with audiences. Furthermore, their album sales were consistently strong, even without relying on top 40 hits. Albums like “Unborn Child” achieved gold status, while they garnered two platinum and four gold albums throughout the 1970s. This sustained popularity and commercial success refute any notion of them being mere one-hit wonders or fleeting acts.

While it may not come as a surprise that Seals and Crofts have yet to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, given the critical underappreciation of soft rock, it is a missed opportunity to acknowledge their cultural significance. Despite their family legacy, their pioneering role in soft rock/yacht rock, and their unwavering commitment to their faith, they remain a relatively obscure act within the Hall of Fame discourse. In my opinion, it is high time their contributions receive the attention they deserve.

What do you think? Are you a fan? Do you think Seals and Crofts deserve to be inducted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame? Leave a comment and let us know what you think.

    Hitting the World Stage
Triumph have achieved significant success throughout their long career. They released a string of highly acclaimed albums, including “Just a Game” (1979), “Allied Forces” (1981), and “Thunder Seven” (1984).

These albums featured hit songs such as “Lay It on the Line,” “Magic Power,” and “Fight the Good Fight,” which became anthems for rock fans around the world. Triumph’s electrifying live performances and their ability to connect with audiences further solidified their reputation as one of the foremost rock bands of their time.

    The US FESTIVAL: 1983

This video tells the whole story!

    Band Members

Rik Emmett: Rik Emmett is a virtuoso guitarist and a charismatic frontman. His soulful vocals and exceptional guitar playing were integral to the signature sound of Triumph. Emmett’s versatility allowed him to seamlessly transition between hard-driving rock riffs and melodic ballads, showcasing his musical prowess.

Gil Moore: Gil Moore, known for his powerful drumming and distinctive voice, provided the backbone of Triumph’s sound. His energetic and passionate performances behind the drum kit, combined with his dynamic vocal delivery, added a unique dimension to the band’s music.

Mike Levine: As the band’s bassist and keyboardist, Mike Levine played a crucial role in shaping the sound of Triumph. His solid bass lines and atmospheric synth textures created a rich musical tapestry that complemented Emmett’s guitar work and Moore’s drumming.

    The End of Triumph
In the interview with Talkin’ Bout Rock, Rik Emmett shed light on the reasons behind Triumph’s end. Following a short set performed at a fan event, which was filmed for a Triumph documentary, Gil Moore expressed his reluctance to continue performing. Having not played the drums since their Sweden reunion, Moore realized that it was time to step away from the stage. This realization led Emmett to conclude that Triumph’s live performances were unlikely to happen again.

    Implications and Moving Forward:
While the news of Triumph’s end is undoubtedly disappointing for fans, it also marks the end of an era in rock music.

The band’s legacy will continue to live on through their timeless music and the memories they created during their heyday. As for the individual band members, they will undoubtedly explore new musical ventures and continue to contribute to the world of rock in their own unique ways.

Triumph’s announcement of their end brings an emotional close to an era of rock music that will forever be remembered. Rikk Emmett’s revelation in the interview leaves little room for speculation, as he confirms that Triumph will not be returning to the stage. While fans mourn the end of an iconic band, they can take solace in the fact that Triumph’s music will continue to inspire generations of rock enthusiasts for years to come.

  • The Forgotten Batman Musical: Exploring Jim Steinman’s Unproduced Masterpiece

Jim Steinman, renowned for his goth-metal classics such as “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and Meat Loaf’s iconic album Bat Out of Hell, had a hidden gem in his repertoire—an unproduced Batman musical. Despite being lesser-known, this project held immense potential and showcased Steinman’s musical prowess. Today, the demos of this lost musical can still be found online, offering a glimpse into what might have been.

    Development and Creative Team
According to the Jim Steinman Fandom Wiki, Steinman collaborated with David Ives, who was set to write the book for the musical. Steinman, of course, would contribute the music and lyrics. There were even reports of Tim Burton being chosen to direct, although he later downplayed his involvement in the project. Unfortunately, no original source was cited for these claims.

    https://youtu.be/yhRTFIzOwpA?si=7_z2XeAlV6M3PFLU

    Challenges and Delays
In 2001, an initial opening date was announced after Steinman and Ives submitted a completed version to Warner Bros. However, the project hit a roadblock and failed to materialize. Then, in 2002, with Burton’s alleged hiring and Steinman’s claim that the show was now “70% done,” a new timeline was set. An out-of-town tryout was scheduled for 2004, followed by a Broadway opening in 2005. Sadly, the project faced further setbacks and never reached completion.

    Musical Highlights
Although the Batman musical was never staged, Meat Loaf later released a song titled “In the Land of the Pig, The Butcher Is King” on his 2006 album, Bat Out of Hell III. This song originated from Steinman’s unproduced musical, offering a glimpse into its captivating potential. Additionally, a playlist of demos allows fans to experience some of the musical’s standout moments, including Catwoman ballads and an energetic Joker number titled “Wonderful Toys.”

    Insights from Jim Steinman:
For those interested in delving deeper into the Batman musical, Jim Steinman shared his insights in a four-hour interview, which can be found on his personal website. This interview provides valuable context and sheds light on the creative process behind the musical.

    Conclusion
The Batman musical remains a lost treasure in Jim Steinman’s repertoire—a testament to his versatility and imaginative storytelling. Although it never made its way to the stage, the demos and interviews offer a window into the creative brilliance that could have been. Steinman’s contributions to the world of music continue to inspire, and his unproduced Batman musical remains a fascinating part of his legacy.

  • Remembering Lou Reed: A Legacy of Musical Innovation

Lou Reed, born on March 2, 1942, was an iconic American musician and songwriter whose impact on the music industry continues to resonate even after his passing on October 27, 2013. As the guitarist, singer, and principal songwriter for The Velvet Underground, Reed played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of rock music. This blog post pays tribute to his extraordinary career and explores his enduring influence on the world of music.

The Velvet Underground and Reed’s Musical Journey
Lou Reed’s musical journey began with The Velvet Underground, a band that emerged in the 1960s. While the group didn’t achieve significant commercial success during its existence, it became a groundbreaking force in the realm of underground and alternative rock music. The Velvet Underground’s fusion of rock, avant-garde, and art influences challenged traditional conventions and set the stage for the development of punk, new wave, and indie rock.

    Lou Reed – Sweet Jane

    Reed’s Distinctive Style:
One of the defining features of Lou Reed’s music was his distinctive deadpan voice. His delivery was often devoid of emotion, creating a unique juxtaposition with the raw and introspective nature of his lyrics. Reed’s poetic and transgressive songwriting tackled taboo subjects such as drug addiction, sexuality, and urban decay, pushing the boundaries of what was acceptable in popular music at the time.

    Experimental Guitar Playing
Reed’s guitar playing was equally innovative and experimental. He incorporated elements of noise, feedback, and dissonance into his compositions, revolutionizing the possibilities of the instrument. His approach inspired countless musicians and laid the groundwork for the development of alternative rock and noise rock genres.

    Solo Career and Cultural Impact
Following the disbandment of The Velvet Underground, Reed embarked on a successful solo career that spanned five decades. He released a series of critically acclaimed albums, including “Transformer” and “Berlin,” which showcased his versatility as a songwriter. Reed’s collaborations with artists like David Bowie and his exploration of different musical styles demonstrated his willingness to constantly evolve and challenge artistic norms.

    Legacy and Influence
Lou Reed’s impact on the music industry cannot be overstated. His contributions to the development of rock music, as both a member of The Velvet Underground and a solo artist, continue to shape contemporary music. In this blog post, we will dive into the extraordinary life and work of Carole King and Gerry Goffin, exploring their collaborative genius, their individual successes, and the indelible mark they left on the music industry.

In this episode of Our Mind on Music, I have the pleasure of welcoming Phil Yale, the host of Phil’s Tracks podcast. Together, we explore the remarkable work of Carole King and Gerry Goffin, as well as other dynamic songwriting duos! Let’s take another look at what Phil and I uncover in our discussion about King/Goffin’s early Brill Building days, including some of the other songwriting duos of the time, and the classic rock and pop classics they wrote together and separately.

    The Early Years
Carole King and Gerry Goffin’s journey began in the vibrant music scene of New York City during the 1960s. They met as young songwriters and quickly realized their shared passion for creating memorable melodies and poignant lyrics. Their partnership took flight, and they became an unstoppable force in the industry.

    Collaborative Brilliance
Together, Carole King’s melodic prowess and Gerry Goffin’s lyrical finesse formed the backbone of their songwriting magic. Their ability to capture the complexities of love, relationships, and the human experience spoke to a generation hungry for authentic and relatable music. Carole King: “Tapestry” and Solo Success
While Carole King and Gerry Goffin achieved tremendous success as a duo, they also pursued individual paths. Carole King, in particular, reached new heights with her groundbreaking album “Tapestry” in 1971. This iconic record, featuring timeless tracks like “It’s Too Late” and “You’ve Got a Friend,” solidified her status as a solo artist and earned her multiple Grammy Awards.

  • Kajagoogoo: A Journey of Synth-Pop and Lasting Inspiration

Kajagoogoo emerged in the vibrant world of 1980s synth-pop. Led by their charismatic frontman, Limahl, the group gained worldwide recognition with their catchy tunes and unique fashion sense. Let’s take a closer look into the story of Kajagoogoo, exploring their formation, major hits, and solo projects.

    Formation and Early Success
Kajagoogoo came together in Leighton Buzzard, England, in 1979. The original lineup consisted of Limahl (vocals), Nick Beggs (bass guitar), Steve Askew (guitar), Stuart Neale (keyboards), and Jez Strode (drums). Drawing inspiration from the burgeoning New Romantic movement, the band created a distinctive sound that blended synth-driven melodies with infectious pop hooks.

    Major Hits and Success
In 1983, Kajagoogoo achieved their breakthrough with the release of their debut single, “Too Shy.”

The song quickly climbed the charts, reaching the top spot in the UK and bringing significant international attention to the young musicians. “Too Shy” showcased Limahl’s soaring vocals and the band’s ability to craft infectious pop anthems. The success of the single pushed their debut album, “White Feathers,” to critical and commercial success.

Following the triumph of “Too Shy,” Kajagoogoo released several other well-received singles, including “Ooh to Be Ah,” “Hang on Now,” and “Big Apple.” These tracks all highlighted the band’s ability to create catchy, danceable tunes that resonated with audiences worldwide.

    Nick Rhodes (Duran Duran)about Kajagoogoo – ABC1(Countdown) – 04.1983

    Solo Projects, Reunion, and Beyond
In 1983, amidst their rising fame, Limahl the other members of the band, parted ways.

In an interview at the time, the singer, whose real name is Christopher Hamill and who adopted the stage name Limahl as an anagram of his surname, explained that a clash of personalities between him and Kajagoogoo’s manager was the underlying cause of their separation. Despite his earnest efforts, the relationship couldn’t be salvaged.

It seems the manager presented the remaining band members with an ultimatum: either Limahl would have to go or he would. Limahl shared that he received a sudden phone call notifying him that he was no longer a part of Kajagoogoo. The singer went on to say that he felt as if the world had come to a halt, stunned by the shock of the decision.

    https://youtu.be/rv_Mezmazew?si=7nlxM-z3z1pYdZUB

“I had devoted my life and soul to Kajagoogoo,” he said, “and then, with a brief and impersonal phone call, it was all over. I admit that I shed tears. Under such circumstances, anyone would be entitled to emotionally unravel.”

Meanwhile, he began to rebuild his career, working on solo album including his single titled “Only For Love.” The single was released in 1983, and was included on his debut solo album, “Don’t Suppose,” released in 1984.

The remaining members of Kajagoogoo also released a new single titled “Big Apple,” which achieved a place in the top ten of the UK charts in September.

Limahl achieved further solo success his international hit, “The NeverEnding Story.”

The song “Never Ending Story” is the theme song for the English version of the 1984 film “The NeverEnding Story.” It was created by Italian musician and producer, Giorgio Moroder. In fact, Limahl released two versions of the song, one in English and one in French.

The English version featured vocals by Beth Andersen, while the French version, titled “L’Histoire Sans Fin,” featured vocals by Ann Calvert.

    https://youtu.be/RACVYZu67C4?si=5ESq8UkWsW1VzvGI

The song achieved great success, reaching the top positions in various countries, including No. 1 in Norway and Sweden, No. 2 in Austria, West Germany, and Italy, No. 4 in the UK, No. 6 in Australia, and No. 6 on the US Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.

Meanwhile, Kajagoogoo continued as a four-piece band, releasing their second album, “Islands,” in 1984. Although the album received positive reviews, it did not replicate the commercial success of their debut. Internal tensions led to the band’s eventual split in 1985.

In 2003, after nearly two decades apart, the original members of Kajagoogoo reunited for a one-off performance at the retro music festival, “Here and Now.” The reunion sparked renewed interest in their music and paved the way for further collaborations.

    Present Day

The love for those early songs, and maybe even some nostalgia, run strong among Limahl and Kajagoogoo fence today. Songs by the band or by the singer can be found in popular media such as movie soundtracks Two KAJAGOOGOO tracks are featured in the 2022 movie ‘THE FENCE’, set in Bristol (UK) in the 80s. • Dupree Bolton: A Jazz Trumpeter’s Journey

Dupree Bolton, a jazz trumpeter whose talent and contributions to the music world have left an indelible mark, remains a mysterious figure in jazz history. Despite the limited information available about his early years, his musical prowess and enigmatic persona have captivated audiences for decades.

    The Trumpet’s Golden Era:
The 1950s witnessed the emergence of influential trumpet players who shaped the course of jazz music. Figures like Theodore “Fats” Navarro and Clifford Brown established themselves as virtuosos, pushing the boundaries of the instrument and inspiring generations to come. The trumpet, with its ability to deliver soaring melodies and evocative solos, became a driving force in the evolving jazz landscape. Notable artists such as Lee Morgan, Thad Jones, Chet Baker, Don Fagerquist, and Blue Mitchell made significant contributions, while Miles Davis and his collaboration with Gil Evans on the iconic album “Kind of Blue” marked a turning point in jazz history.

    Dupree Bolton’s Mysterious Entry:
In 1959, a quintet led by Harold Land entered the Radio Recorder Studios in Los Angeles for a recording session. Among the musicians was a relatively unknown trumpet player named Dupree Bolton. Astonishingly, even Land had no knowledge of Bolton’s background or origins. Nevertheless, Bolton’s extraordinary talent on the trumpet quickly gained recognition, and he was soon compared to the legendary Clifford Brown. The lack of information surrounding Bolton’s early years only added to the intrigue surrounding his meteoric rise in the jazz scene.

    Family Influences and Musical Journey:
Bolton’s musical journey was influenced by his father, Dupree Bolton Sr., a multi-talented musician. Though claims of his influence on guitarist Charlie Christian are disputed, Bolton Sr.’s impact on his son’s musical development cannot be denied. From a young age, Bolton Jr. showed a passion for music, initially playing the violin before transitioning to the trumpet. At the age of 14, he made the daring decision to leave home and join Jay McShann’s traveling big band, immersing himself in the vibrant world of jazz.

Challenges on the Road and Personal Struggles:
Life on the road with McShann’s band presented Bolton with both opportunities and challenges. He experienced the exhilaration of performing alongside seasoned musicians but also faced the hardships and temptations of a musician’s lifestyle. Exposure to drugs at a young age would have a lasting impact on Bolton, affecting his personal and professional life.

The Legacy of an Enigmatic Talent:
Dupree Bolton’s story serves as a captivating glimpse into the life of a jazz musician who, despite the limited information available, left an enduring legacy. His remarkable talent on the trumpet and his ability to captivate audiences with his performances remain a testament to his musical genius. While the mysteries surrounding his early years may never be fully unraveled, Dupree Bolton’s contributions to jazz continue to inspire and intrigue musicians and enthusiasts alike.

    Conclusion:
Dupree Bolton’s life and career embody the essence of the jazz genre—full of passion, talent, and a touch of mystery. His journey from an unknown trumpet player to a figure compared to the great Clifford Brown is a testament to his exceptional musical abilities. While the details of his early life may remain elusive, Bolton’s impact on jazz and his enigmatic persona remain unforgettable. The story of Dupree Bolton reminds us of the power and allure of jazz music and the remarkable individuals who shape its history.

  • Remembering Django Reinhardt: Born January 23, 1910

Django Reinhardt, whose real name was Jean Reinhardt, was an influential Belgian-born jazz guitarist and composer. Born on January 23, 1910, in Liberchies, Belgium, Reinhardt became renowned for his innovative playing style and virtuosic skills on the guitar.

    Young Django with Banjo: 1923

At the age of 18, Reinhardt suffered a devastating fire accident that severely damaged his left hand, impairing the use of his fourth and fifth fingers. Despite this, he developed a unique technique that utilized only his index and middle fingers, enabling him to create remarkable music that blended European influences with American jazz.

    Django Reinhardt and family: 1927

Reinhardt’s most famous song and biggest hit is “Minor Swing,” which he co-wrote with violinist Stéphane Grappelli. This composition, characterized by its infectious rhythm and melodic brilliance, has become a jazz standard and a hallmark of Reinhardt’s artistic legacy.

In the early 1930s, Reinhardt and Grappelli formed the Quintette du Hot Club de France, a groundbreaking ensemble that played an instrumental role in shaping the European jazz scene. Their energetic and innovative performances captivated audiences, and Reinhardt’s improvisational prowess on the guitar drew widespread acclaim.

Tragically, Reinhardt’s life was cut short on May 16, 1953, when he died of a brain hemorrhage at the age of 43. His untimely passing marked the end of an era, but his influence on jazz guitar has endured and continues to inspire generations of musicians.

Django Reinhardt’s contributions to music, particularly his pioneering guitar technique and his ability to fuse diverse musical traditions, have solidified his status as one of the greatest guitarists in jazz history. His enduring legacy is a testament to his artistic brilliance and his ability to overcome adversity to create extraordinary music.

Celebrating The Bangles on the Birthday of Susanna Hoffs: A Timeless Musical Journey
  • Judee Sill: An Enigmatic Singer-Songwriter and Her Tragic Journey

Judee Sill, born on October 7, 1944, was a singer-songwriter with deeply religious overtones and a penchant for the occult, making her one of rock’s more intriguing and lesser-known figures. Born into a family of old Hollywood wealth, Sill faced early tragedy with the death of her father during childhood and the subsequent loss of her brother in a car crash. These experiences instilled in her a bleak outlook on life, which she expressed through an arty, disaffected attitude.

Sill harbored resentment toward her stepfather and disapproved of her mother’s remarriage. As a form of quiet revenge, she embarked on a nomadic lifestyle, traveling across America. While she had always been interested in music, it wasn’t until her travels that she began taking it more seriously, performing in small coffeehouses and dive bars for her own amusement.

During this time, Sill and her friends experimented with drugs for recreational and exploratory purposes. However, as she continued her wanderings, she fell into a regular heroin habit, eventually developing a costly addiction that required $150 per day to sustain.

In the late 1960s, Sill was arrested for heroin possession and served three months in prison. During her incarceration, she managed to overcome her addiction. Upon her release, she devoted herself entirely to making music. Returning to Los Angeles, she utilized her connections in Hollywood and was introduced to David Geffen, who was in the process of establishing Asylum Records, a label focusing on non-rock music. Recognizing Sill’s talent as a writer and performer, Geffen promptly signed her to Asylum, making her self-titled debut album the label’s inaugural release.

Through David Geffen, Sill crossed paths with Graham Nash, who became an ardent admirer and produced her first single, “Jesus Was a Cross Maker.” The rest of her eponymous album was orchestrated and produced by Bob Harris, Sill’s ex-husband. “Judee Sill,” released in 1971, received immediate acclaim. The album featured lush orchestration and showcased Sill’s voice through overdubs, often arranged in four-part chorales or fugues. It fit well within the light rock and folk-rock foundations of the Laurel Canyon sound, associated with female singer-songwriters like Carole King and Joni Mitchell, who were also signed to Asylum. Sill embarked on a tour as the opening act for Nash and David Crosby, which exposed her intimate songwriting and skillful guitar playing to a wider audience. However, despite receiving some airplay for “Jesus Was a Cross Maker,” her record struggled to make a significant impact.

Sill was known for her perfectionist tendencies, often spending a year to craft a single song. It wasn’t until late 1972 that she returned to the studio to record her second and final album, “Heart Food.” The album featured what is probably Sill’s best-known song, “The Kiss.”

    https://youtu.be/N0Z1Zx_LP7A?si=iBQrCtAcCZIyiEkN

The album received enthusiastic reviews but fared poorly commercially. Sill took charge of orchestrating and arranging “Heart Food,” relying heavily on multi-layered strings and expansive production. Unable to attract a sizable following yet unwilling to perform as a supporting act, Sill’s fame waned, and she eventually disappeared from public view.

Rumors circulated regarding Sill’s subsequent activities, although it is confirmed that she relapsed into heroin addiction and became heavily involved with cocaine. Graham Nash claimed to have learned as early as 1974 that Sill had died of an overdose, but this information later proved to be incorrect. Nevertheless, the fact that Nash, with whom she had worked closely just a few years prior, believed her to be deceased illustrates the extent to which Sill had withdrawn from public life. Tragically, Judee Sill, at the age of 35, passed away on November 23, 1979, succumbing to a drug overdose.

Though she achieved only modest success during her lifetime, Sill’s influence looms large. She left a lasting impact on fellow West Coast singer-songwriter Warren Zevon, and her songs have been covered and cited as a primary source of inspiration by artists such as Andy Partridge, Liz Phair, Beth Orton, Bill Callahan, and Bonnie “Prince” Billy. In the 21st century, her two albums have been reissued multiple times. In 2005, her previously unreleased third album, “Dreams Come True,” produced by Bill Plummer, engineered by Emitt Rhodes, and featuring a finished mix by Jim O’Rourke in 2004, finally saw the light of day, almost 30 years after it was shelved. It was followed by “Live in London: The BBC Recordings 1972-1973” in 2007 and, in 2018, the release of “Songs of Rapture and Redemption: Rarities & Live.”

This collection included remastered demos from her album recording sessions, solo home recordings, and an entire concert from the Boston Music Hall, all packaged in a deluxe set with new liner notes. Judee Sill’s profound musical talent and unique artistic vision continue to resonate with listeners, even after her untimely death on November 23, 1979.

  • A 40-Year Look Back at Van Halen’s 1984 (and My Undying Love for “Jump”)

Firecrackers haven’t exploded this loud in 40 years! Today, January 9th, marks the anniversary of a sonic boom that shook the rock world: Van Halen unleashed their iconic album 1984. A masterpiece of high-octane rock, keyboard-kissed anthems, and Eddie Van Halen’s mind-bending guitar wizardry, 1984 remains a landmark even in the pantheon of legendary records.

    Released: January 9, 1984

But here’s the thing, 1984 isn’t just an album; it’s a time capsule, a snapshot of an era where synthesizers danced with shredding guitars, and David Lee Roth’s swagger could melt amps from a hundred paces. It’s an album that begs the question: which track is your favorite?

For me, the answer is clear as a Californian sunset: “Jump.” From the opening keyboard riff that grabs your soul like a neon hook, to Eddie’s gravity-defying solo that paints rainbows across the sonic sky, to Roth’s infectious “higher and higher” chant, “Jump” is pure, unadulterated rock ecstasy. It’s a song that gets your head banging, your feet stomping, and your inner air guitarist leaping for joy.

But “Jump” isn’t just a party anthem; it’s a song about chasing dreams, pushing boundaries, and refusing to be boxed in. It’s the sound of a band taking off in a rocket ship built from equal parts musical talent and audacious spirit. And even though 40 years have passed, that sense of flight, that feeling of limitless possibility, still soars out of every speaker.

Still, 1984 is more than just “Jump!” There’s the fiery fury of “Panama,” the bluesy synth-swagger of “I’ll Wait,” the legendary power of “Hot for Teacher,” and the moody, atmospheric title track. Each song is a different facet of Van Halen’s diamond, showcasing their range, their power, and their undeniable skill.

So, on this 40th anniversary, let’s crank up the volume, scream-sing the lyrics, and celebrate the album that brought us Eddie’s pyrotechnic solos, Roth’s showmanship, and a symphony of rock that still ignites us today. And while you’re at it, share your own favorite track from 1984! Let’s keep the party rocking – after all, with an album this good, 40 years feels like just the beginning.

What’s your favorite track from Van Halen’s 1984? Share your thoughts in the comments below and let’s keep the conversation alive!

  • Jimmy Page at 80: A Life in Six Strings – From Blues Beginnings to Rock Royalty

    Happy 80th Jimmy Page!

James Patrick Page, aka Jimmy Page was born on this day, January 9th, in 1944. Today, as he turns 80, we celebrate the man who transformed the blues into stadium-shaking rock anthems and forever etched his name in music history.

From Yardbirds to Zep: Page’s early career blazed through London’s session scene before igniting with the Yardbirds. But his true destiny unfolded in 1968 when he formed Led Zeppelin. This wasn’t just another band; it was a sonic force with Page as its epicenter.

Riffs That Crumble Mountains: Armed with a Les Paul screaming through Marshall amps, Page wove magic with his fingers. From the thunderous chords of “Whole Lotta Love” to the mesmerizing solo in “Stairway to Heaven,” his riffs were sonic avalanches, effortlessly shifting from bluesy grit to celestial harmonies.

    Whole Lotta Love: https://youtu.be/HQmmM_qwG4k?si=2Vb0ney5YmI3bSam

Stairway to Superstardom: Led Zeppelin IV, fueled by Page’s guitar wizardry and tracks like “Black Dog” and the immortal “Stairway to Heaven” became one of the best-selling albums of all time. They packed stadiums, shredded arenas, and cemented their place as rock royalty.

Beyond Led Zeppelin: Though tragedy struck with John Bonham’s passing in 1980, Page’s musical journey continued. From his band, “The Firm” to reunions with Plant, to collaborations with icons like The Edge and Jack White, and a documentary showcase in “It Might Get Loud,” he proved his passion for music remained untamed.

A Legacy Woven in Strings: Signature guitars from Gibson and Fender, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame double induction, and countless accolades tell only part of the story. Jimmy Page’s legacy is the music itself: timeless riffs, groundbreaking compositions, and a spirit that dared to push the boundaries of rock and roll.

Celebrate the Riff Lord on his 80th! Crank up that Zeppelin album, let the music wash over you, and remember the man who showed us the true power of six strings and a burning heart.

    Happy birthday, Jimmy Page!

  • Fleetwood Mac – Rumours

Recorded between February and August of 1976, Rumours by Fleetwood Mac was released on February 4th of 1977.

After a number of lineup changes prior to 1975, the band formed this now classic line upof Lindsey Buckingham on guitar and vocals, Mick Fleetwood on drums, Christine McVie on keyboards and vocals, John McVie on bass, and Stevie Nicks on vocals.

Rumours was the band’s eleventh studio album and was released amid incredibly challenging personal relationship challenges. John McVie was the one who suggested the album title because he felt the members were writing “journals and diaries” about each other through music. As the name suggests, incredible press intrusions into the band members’ lives led to inaccurate stories – yes, Rumours.

  • Saturday Night Fever (1977)

Saturday Night Fever was the best-selling movie soundtrack in history, until the success of “The Bodyguard” OST.

Copies Sold: over 40 million to date

    Fun facts:

    1. The album stayed at the top of the charts for 24 straight weeks back in 1978.

    2. “Stayin’ Alive” is an early example of looping in music! The drum part was created using a section of the drums from the song, “Night Fever.”

    3. Saturday Night Fever is also unique for being the first example of cross-media marketing, with the soundtrack released a month ahead of the film to promote the movie, and the movie in turn helping boost the popularity of the soundtrack. Another Travolta film, “Grease,” used this cross media marketing a year later.

    4. Of course, the album is mostly remembered for the huge hits by The Bee Gees, such as “Stayin’ Alive,” “Night Fever” and “More than a Woman,” BUT…The band didn’t even get involved in the film until post production; while filming his scenes, John Travolta was actually dancing to the likes of Boz Scaggs and Stevie Wonder…!

Here’s a link to one of the most memorable songs from the album:

  • Auld Lang Syne: Beyond the Clinking Glasses – A Dive into Scotland’s Enduring Anthem

More than just a New Year’s Eve singalong, “Auld Lang Syne” holds a depth of history, emotion, and linguistic complexity that deserves to be explored beyond the clinking glasses and tipsy renditions. Let’s raise a dram (or a cup of kindness) and delve into the soul of this iconic Scottish song.

    Beyond the Familiar:

First things first, “Auld Lang Syne” is actually part of a very old tradition. While often attributed to the bard Robert Burns, the song existed in various forms for centuries before he documented it in 1788. He collected the lyrics from oral tradition, polishing them and giving them a lasting structure. So, when we raise our voices, we’re echoing voices that have sung across Scotland for generations.

    Lost in Translation:

The title itself is a beautiful and evocative phrase in Scots, the language of Burns and a close cousin to English. “Auld Lang Syne” literally translates to “old long since,” a poetic way to say “for old times’ sake.” This sentiment lies at the heart of the song, a bittersweet remembrance of the past and a toast to the enduring bonds of friendship.

    More Than Just New Year’s:

While commonly associated with New Year’s Eve, “Auld Lang Syne” wasn’t originally intended for that purpose. It was sung at Hogmanay, the Scottish New Year’s celebration, but also at other occasions throughout the year, from birthday parties to wakes. The song’s themes of remembrance and new beginnings resonate just as deeply at any time of year.

    A Global Embrace:

The song’s popularity has transcended borders, with versions sung in countless languages worldwide. From Japanese karaoke bars to South African townships, “Auld Lang Syne” unites people in a shared moment of reflection and celebration.

While “Auld Lang Syne” rings out at celebrations across the globe, Japan bids farewell to the old year with its own poignant melody – “Hotaru no Hikari,” meaning “The Glow of a Firefly.” This gentle song evokes a different kind of nostalgia, melancholic yet hopeful, echoing the faint twinkle of the firefly as it illuminates the fading light. Like “Auld Lang Syne,” “Hotaru no Hikari” transcends its New Year’s Eve association, often sung at graduations and school closures, a bittersweet farewell to chapters past and a gentle encouragement to embrace the unknown. So, as the year’s final flicker fades, both Scotland and Japan remind us to raise a glass, share a song, and remember that within the embers of endings, hope for new beginnings always glows.

It’s a testament to the universal human experience of cherishing memories and looking forward to what lies ahead.

So, the next time you raise a glass and belt out “Auld Lang Syne,” remember the rich history, the poetic language, and the deep emotions woven into every verse. It’s not just a party song; it’s a window into the Scottish soul, a reminder of the connections that bind us, and a hope for a brighter future.

Auld Lang Syne: Beyond the Clinking Glasses – A Dive into Scotland’s Enduring Anthem
  • Podcast Search Engine Optimization (SEO): What, Why, and How?

Podcasts heavily depend on the metadata associated with a show, including episode and show titles and descriptions. Optimizing these SEO elements is crucial for making your podcast easily discoverable by search engines, podcast platforms, and new listeners.

Whether you’re a Spotify fan or not, they’re eight recommendations to grow podcast audiences, establish a brand, and increase visibility for any podcast, are well worth considering.

    The Basics: Titles and Descriptions

Meta descriptions; all the text related to your audio content, play a pivotal role in SEO as they enable search engines to locate, categorize, and display your podcast on search engine results pages (SERPs). Most search engines feature a dedicated podcast section on their SERPs. The closer your content’s placement is to the coveted first page, the greater your chances of listeners/viewers clicking on your podcast.

Ok, enough “WHAT”… Let’s get to the “HOW!”

    Craft a captivating show title

Choosing the right podcast show title is crucial. It should be unique enough for search engines to identify while also being familiar enough to make it appealing to listeners.

Things to avoid when naming your podcast:

    • Common or overused names
    • Unconventional spellings and special characters
    • Lengthy titles
    • Generic words

For example, my podcast is called “Our Mind on Music.” When directing people to search for us on Google…etc, we ask them to search for “ourmindonmusic” all together, no spaces, no caps. However, in the show title and description, as well as the episode title and description, the words are separated. Having said this @ourmindonmusic, #ourmindonmusic, and #OMoM are also included… I find myself wondering if they should all be there. SEO is an ongoing process. This is one I’ll need to ponder and experiment with.

For you… Here are four TO DO points for naming (or re-naming) your podcast:

    • Keep the title concise (three to four words).
    • Avoid abbreviations, punctuation, and misspelled words that may confuse search algorithms.
    • Incorporate a keyword that reflects your content.
    • Be creative.

An example of an effective search engine and listener-friendly podcast name is “The Art of Travel” by Olivia Lopez. While the show primarily focuses on travel (a keyword included in the title), it also explores broader topics like personal growth and sustainability. By avoiding a typical “travel” niche name such as “Travel Destinations,” Olivia’s title remains short, easy to remember, and aligns well with SEO guidelines.

    Craft an engaging show description

You may think, “Well, most people don’t read descriptions, so who cares?” This may or may not be true, but what’s certain is, search engines and podcast platforms do “read” them and use them. This is why it’s crucial to optimize show descriptions that provide the right information. Your show description should include the following elements:

    • The podcast host’s name
    • Topics covered in the show
    • Any abbreviations associated with the show’s name

These elements are essential because new listeners often discover podcasts by searching for specific topics or podcast names.

When writing your description, keep the following SEO guidelines in mind:

    • Limit the description to a hundred characters or less.
    • Introduce yourself.
    • Include the keyword.
    • Incorporate related secondary keywords.
    • Include links to your social media accounts.

“Teenager Therapy” does an excellent job of constructing straightforward, SEO-friendly titles while considering their target audience’s search intent. For instance, their episode titled “How to Throw a House Party” would not perform as well if it were called “The Rules and Social Etiquette of Small, Intimate Gatherings.” Recognizing that teens are likely to search for “house party,” they strategically use that keyword while keeping the title relatable and easily comprehensible.

Take inspiration from the informative and concise description of “Sounding Off with Rick Beato”… “Welcome to Sounding Off! Rick Beato’s weekly podcast featuring interviews with known and unknown artists, composers, musicians and performers.” This description includes the host’s name, podcast name, and relevant keywords, making it easier for search engines to find, index, and present the podcast to the appropriate audience.

Leverage episode titles to your advantage

Episode titles are among the shortest yet most challenging aspects of metadata. They must grab the audience’s attention, complement the episode description, and provide valuable information for search engines. Episode titles follow similar guidelines as your show title, with a few additional considerations like incorporating keywords specific to the episode’s theme, guest names, and search intent.

    Craft searchable episode descriptions

Episode descriptions, also known as show notes, entice listeners to hit the play button, but they also play a crucial role in SEO by making it easier for search engines to find your podcast. Consider the following tips when writing episode descriptions:

    • Keep them brief, comprising three or four sentences.
    • Make the first 120 characters count.
    • Include important keywords and guest names.
    • Establish a connection with the episode title.
    • Avoid filler words and spoilers.

Focus on the topics discussed in your episodes. Consider writing your podcast episode description as if it were a blog post, incorporating relevant keywords and providing a concise summary of the episode’s content. When people are interested in something, they will search for it.

Advanced Strategies: Transcripts and Website Optimization

Provide transcripts for your episodes: Transcripts are textual versions of your podcast episodes and can significantly impact your SEO efforts. By including transcripts, you make your content accessible to a wider audience, including those with hearing impairments and non-native English speakers. Additionally, transcripts enable search engines to crawl and index your content more effectively, leading to improved search rankings.

Transcripts should be accurate, well-formatted, and synchronized with the audio. You can manually create transcripts or leverage automated transcription services like Otter.ai or Descript. Once you have your transcript, you can embed it on your website or include it in the show notes.

    Optimize your podcast website

Having a dedicated website for your podcast provides various benefits, including a central hub for your episodes, show notes, and additional content. When optimizing your podcast website for SEO, consider the following:

    • Use descriptive URLs: Ensure that your URLs include relevant keywords and are easy to read.
    • Optimize page titles and meta descriptions: Each page on your website should have a unique and descriptive title and meta description that incorporates relevant keywords.
    • Create a podcast sitemap: Submit a podcast-specific sitemap to search engines to help them discover and index your episodes more efficiently.
    • Implement structured data: Use structured data markup, such as JSON-LD, to provide search engines with additional information about your podcast, such as episode details, guest names, and ratings.

    Leverage backlinks and collaborations

Backlinks, which are links from other websites to your podcast website, are an essential aspect of SEO. They indicate to search engines that your content is valuable and trustworthy. Actively seek opportunities to collaborate with other podcasters, industry experts, or influencers who can link to your podcast on their websites or social media profiles.

Consider reaching out to relevant websites or bloggers in your niche to explore guest writing opportunities or podcast features. By building strong relationships and providing valuable content, you increase the likelihood of acquiring backlinks and expanding your reach.

Promote your podcast on social media

Social media platforms offer significant opportunities to promote your podcast to a wider audience and enhance your SEO efforts. Create social media profiles for your podcast on platforms like Twitter (X), Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Regularly share engaging content related to your podcast, including episode highlights, quotes, behind-the-scenes photos, and guest announcements.

When sharing your episodes on social media, use relevant hashtags and encourage your audience to engage with your content. Engaging with your listeners, responding to comments, and fostering a sense of community can lead to increased visibility, user-generated content, and potential backlinks.

As I mentioned before, SEO is an ongoing process. It may take time to see significant results. Still, consistently implementing the strategies outlined here, and monitoring your podcast’s performance, you will be able to refine your approach and improve your podcast’s discoverability over time.

  • Exploring Ethereal Sounds: Azam Ali, Dead Can Dance, and Kindred Artists

I recently spoke with Matt Hopkins of Whispers of the Dragon and Tilburg for an episode of Ourmindonmusic:

In our chat, Matt spoke about some of his prog rock influences such aa Renaissance, and he also spoke about a few, more ethereal, world music influences. I was intrigued, and started to do some research. This post is bases on listening and reading I’ve done since recording my chat with Matt.

If you know of other artists with similar appeal, please do share in the comments. I know I’d really appreciate it, and I’m guessing others who enjoy the music mentioned here would too!

The first artist I listened to in this style I’ll refer to as “enchanting, ethereal music”, was Azam Ali. Renowned for her mesmerizing vocals and captivating compositions, Azam Ali has carved a distinct niche for herself in the global music scene. I also listened to Irfan or Stellamara. While Azam Ali may not have directly collaborated with these groups, their music shares a similar appeal with hers.

Still, this post would not be complete without mention of “Dead Can Dance.” This band is listed as an instrumental influence by many creating music in this sonic realm. So, let’s have a little look at all of these amazing artist.

Dead Can Dance: Pioneers of Ethereal Music

Before exploring kindred artists, it is crucial to acknowledge the profound influence of Dead Can Dance on the genre of ethereal music. Founded in 1981 by Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry, their music serves as a gateway to mystical realms, captivating listeners with its ethereal allure. With their atmospheric soundscapes and otherworldly vocals, Dead Can Dance has become an influence for many creating music in this style. A definitive example of their transcendent sonic capabilities can be found in the iconic track “The Host of Seraphim,” featured on the album “The Serpent’s Egg.” Through this mesmerizing composition, Dead Can Dance showcases their ability to create a profound and transformative musical experience.

Azam Ali: Exploring Ethereal Sounds with Niyaz, Vas, and More

Azam Ali is a captivating artist whose ethereal vocals and mesmerizing compositions have earned her a prominent place in the world music scene. With a focus on cultural fusion and artistic expression, she has embarked on a remarkable musical journey, collaborating with various bands and artists. One of her notable projects is Niyaz, a band she co-founded, which skillfully merges ancient Persian and Sufi poetry with modern electronic elements. Through albums like “Niyaz,” “Nine Heavens,” and “The Fourth Light,” Niyaz showcases Azam Ali’s enchanting vocals, seamlessly intertwined with traditional instruments and electronic beats. A standout track from Niyaz is “Dilruba,” a mesmerizing composition that beautifully captures the essence of their unique sound.

Prior to Niyaz, Azam Ali was a member of the influential band Vas, where she collaborated with percussionist Greg Ellis. Vas’s music explores a diverse range of styles, incorporating Middle Eastern, Indian, Celtic, and Mediterranean influences. Albums like “Sunyata,” “In the Garden of Souls,” and “Feast of Silence” showcase Azam Ali’s evocative vocals, complemented by the band’s intricate arrangements. One of Vas’s standout tracks is “The Reaper and the Flowers,” a hauntingly beautiful song that showcases the band’s mastery of blending different musical traditions.

    Irfan: Spiritual Soundscapes
Irfan, a Bulgarian band, weaves together spiritual and folk-inspired melodies to create captivating soundscapes. While not collaborating directly with Azam Ali, their music shares a similar appeal. Listeners can immerse themselves in the haunting beauty of “Sheikh Ahmad,” a track from their album “The Eternal Return,” which seamlessly blends Eastern and Western musical elements.

    Stellamara: Ancient Melodies Reimagined
Stellamara’s music draws inspiration from medieval, Middle Eastern, and Eastern European traditions. Although Azam Ali has not collaborated with them directly, their enchanting compositions resonate with fans of her work. “Prituri se Planinata,” from the album “The Seven Valleys,” showcases their unique fusion of ancient and contemporary sounds, transporting listeners to a realm of enchantment.

    Encouraging Musical Exploration
Just as Azam Ali’s music and Dead Can Dance’s ethereal landscapes have captivated audiences, Irfan, and Stellamara offer listeners a similar auditory experience. By exploring the works of all these artists, I found myself on a journey through mystical melodies and diverse cultural influences.

As I discuss with Matt Hopkins on OurMindOnMusic, the music of Whispers of the Dragon, and Tilburg also took me on a similar journey. While I recommend exploring their whole discography, here are a couple of pieces that really caught my imagination.

  • Renaissance: Unveiling Prog Rock Pioneers of the 1960s

Renaissance was a British prog rock band that began in the 1960s. Renaissance created a unique sound that combined elements of classical, folk, and rock. In a recent #OurMindonMusic interview with Matt Hopkins of #Tilburg and #WhispersoftheDragon, Matt listed Renaissance as an early influence on his own musical development. In this article, we’ll explore the story of Renaissance, including their album releases, and highlight a track Matt recommended as a good starting point to the band’s music; “Ashes Are Burning.”

(See this OurMindonMusic article for more information about M. Hopkins and his evolving musical journey.)

    Where It All Began
Renaissance was founded in 1969 in London, England, by a group of talented musicians. The band’s early lineup featured vocalist Jane Relf, guitarist Keith Relf, keyboardist John Hawken, bassist Louis Cennamo, and drummer Jim McCarty. However, the band underwent several personnel changes over the years, with Annie Haslam eventually becoming the band’s prominent vocalist and a defining figure in their sound.

    “Ashes Are Burning”: Album
In 1973, Renaissance released their critically acclaimed album, “Ashes Are Burning.” This landmark record showcased the band’s virtuosity and musical vision. The album featured the classic lineup of Annie Haslam on vocals, Michael Dunford on guitars, John Tout on keyboards, Jon Camp on bass, and Terry Sullivan on drums. “Ashes Are Burning” became a cornerstone of their discography and a touchstone for progressive rock enthusiasts.

    “Ashes Are Burning”: Song
At the heart of the album lies the epic title track, “Ashes Are Burning.” This eleven-minute masterpiece encapsulates Renaissance’s signature style, combining intricate instrumental passages, soaring vocal melodies, and profound lyrics. Annie Haslam’s emotive and powerful vocals take center stage, leaving a lasting impression on listeners. Over time, “Ashes Are Burning” has become a beloved fan favorite and a testament to the band’s creative prowess.

    Other Album Releases
Alongside “Ashes Are Burning,” Renaissance released several other remarkable albums during their peak years. “Prologue” (1972), “Turn of the Cards” (1974), and “Scheherazade and Other Stories” (1975) further solidified the band’s reputation for their rich musical tapestries, symphonic arrangements, and Haslam’s captivating vocal performances. These albums showcased Renaissance’s ability to transport listeners to imaginary worlds through their music.

    Legacy and Revival:
Renaissance’s music continues to resonate with fans of progressive rock, and their legacy as pioneers of the genre remains influential. While the band experienced lineup changes and periods of hiatus over the years, they have periodically reunited and released new material, ensuring their music reaches new generations of listeners. Their commitment to pushing the boundaries of rock music has left an enduring mark on the progressive rock landscape.

  • Max Webster: A Canadian Rock Legacy

Max Webster was a Canadian rock band formed in Toronto in 1972. The band’s music blended elements of progressive rock, hard rock, and pop, creating a unique sound that set them apart from their contemporaries. Max Webster gained a dedicated following in Canada throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, mostly due to their energetic live performances and the charismatic stage presence of their frontman, Kim Mitchell.

The Early Years and Rise to Success

The original lineup of Max Webster consisted of Kim Mitchell on vocals and guitar, Terry Watkinson on keyboards, Mike Tilka on bass, and Paul Kersey on drums. They released their self-titled debut album in 1976, which received critical acclaim and laid the foundation for their subsequent success.

These albums featured a range of musical styles, from catchy pop-rock tunes to more complex and adventurous compositions.

Kim Mitchell’s Solo Career and Beyond

Despite their popularity in Canada, Max Webster did not achieve significant commercial success outside the country. However, they gained a dedicated cult following and influenced many Canadian musicians who would later find success on the international stage.

In 1981, Kim Mitchell decided to pursue a solo career, effectively disbanding Max Webster. He went on to release successful solo albums and became a prominent figure in Canadian rock music.

    The Legacy of Max Webster

Max Webster’s legacy lives on through their music, which continues to be celebrated by fans of Canadian rock. Their unique blend of rock genres, coupled with Kim Mitchell’s distinctive songwriting and guitar playing, contributed to their enduring appeal.

    The Post-Max Webster Era

After the dissolution of Max Webster, the members went on to various musical endeavors.

Kim Mitchell continued his successful solo career, releasing numerous albums and singles that topped the Canadian charts. He also toured extensively and collaborated with other notable Canadian musicians.

Terry Watkinson pursued a career in music production and songwriting, working with artists such as Rush, Aldo Nova, and Honeymoon Suite. He also released several solo albums and joined the band Platinum Blonde in 1985. His visual art is really stunning as well… That really is an almost obscene amount of talent for person to have!

Mike Tilka continued to play bass in various bands and projects throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He also worked as a music producer and engineer.

Paul Kersey retired from music after Max Webster disbanded and focused on other pursuits.

Max Webster was a significant force in Canadian rock music during the 1970s and early 1980s.

Their music continues to be enjoyed by fans around the world, and their legacy is firmly cemented in the annals of Canadian rock history.

Max Webster: A Canadian Rock Legacy
  • Nica: “The Jazz Baroness”

Baroness Kathleen Annie Pannonica de Koenigswarter, often referred to as Nica or “the Jazz Baroness,” was a prominent figure in the jazz scene and an influential patron of jazz musicians during the mid-20th century. Born on December 10, 1913, in London, England, Nica was a member of the Rothschild banking family.

Nica developed a deep passion for jazz music, particularly bebop, and became a devoted supporter of the jazz community. She was known for her close friendships and associations with numerous jazz musicians, including Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, and many others. Nica’s love for jazz led her to establish a close relationship with the New York jazz scene, where she became a central figure in the bebop movement.

Thelonious Monk, one of the most influential jazz pianists and composers of all time, was a close friend of Nica’s. He dedicated the composition “Pannonica” to her as a tribute. The composition is a beautiful and introspective piece that reflects the deep appreciation and admiration Monk had for Nica. The song captures her elegance, passion for jazz, and her profound impact on the jazz community.

Another notable song dedicated to Nica is “Nica’s Dream,” composed by Horace Silver. This piece was inspired by Nica’s generous support and encouragement of jazz musicians. It embodies her spirit of fostering creativity and providing a nurturing environment for jazz artists to thrive.

Nica’s influence extended beyond her personal relationships with musicians. She played a significant role in supporting jazz artists financially, emotionally, and even providing them with a place to stay. Her New York City residence, known as the “Jazz Baroness’s House”, became a gathering place for jazz musicians, where they could socialize, rehearse, and collaborate.

Despite her privileged background, Nica defied societal expectations and embraced a non-traditional lifestyle by immersing herself in the jazz world. Her devotion to jazz and the musicians she supported earned her immense respect within the jazz community. Nica’s contributions and impact on jazz continue to be celebrated and remembered, making her an iconic figure in the history of jazz music.

  • The Enigmatic Talent of Nick Drake: A Folk-Rock Icon

Nick Drake, born on June 19, 1948, in Rangoon, Burma (now Myanmar) was an extraordinary musician whose hauntingly beautiful compositions have left an indelible mark on the realms of folk-rock and singer/songwriter genres.

Despite his untimely demise, Drake’s ethereal voice, captivating melodies, and acoustic-based arrangements continue to be revered as iconic achievements in the world of music.

    Early Life and Musical Journey
While Drake’s father, Rodney, remembered him being elected as the head boy at school, it was evident that Nick had no interest in taking charge. Instead, his true passion lied in crafting soul-stirring melodies and poetic lyrics. Drake’s unique style, reminiscent of Donovan’s breathy vocals and Van Morrison’s introspective nature, caught the attention of Fairport Convention member during a live show in Cambridge. This encounter led him to sign with Joe Boyd’s label, propelling his musical career forward.

    A Tragic Legacy
Regrettably, Nick Drake’s talent was underappreciated during his lifetime. The enigmatic artist passed almost unnoticed, leaving behind a collection of melancholic albums that would later be hailed as the pinnacle of British folk-rock and the entire singer/songwriter genre. His introspective and somber compositions resonate deeply with listeners, evoking a sense of raw emotion and vulnerability.

    Notable Hits
Among Drake’s notable hits, two stand out as exemplars of his unparalleled artistry. “All My Trials,” a poignant and introspective piece, which he recorded with his sister, Gabrielle Drake. The songs showcases Nick Drake’s ability to blend profound lyrics with captivating melodies, further accented by the harmonies the two singers create. Probably Nick Drake’s best-known song, though, is “Pink Moon.” This ethereal song is a calm, flowing experience that exemplifies Nick Drake’s melancholic brilliance.

The Demise of a Troubled Soul
Despite his undeniable talent, Nick Drake faced personal struggles that haunted him throughout his life. After a period of disillusionment with the music industry, he briefly pursued a career in computer programming. However, on the first day of his job, Drake walked out, unable to find solace in anything other than his music. Tragically, on November 25, 1974, Nick Drake’s journey came to a premature end when he died from an overdose of antidepressant medication.
Nick Drake’s legacy as a singular talent endures, elevating his status to that of an icon in the realm of folk-rock and singer/songwriter genres. His introspective and hauntingly beautiful compositions continue to captivate audiences, evoking a profound emotional response. Although his time on Earth was cut short, his music lives on, as a testament to the enduring power of artistic expression.

The Enigmatic Talent of Nick Drake: A Folk-Rock Icon
  • Breakfast in America – Supertramp

“Breakfast in America” is one of Supertramp’s most successful albums. It was released in March 1979 and went on to become their biggest-selling record. The album reached the number one spot on the charts in multiple countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom. It features several hit songs, including “The Logical Song,” “Take the Long Way Home,” and “Goodbye Stranger.”

The album cover for “Breakfast in America” is quite iconic. It features a stylized depiction of the Manhattan skyline, with the band’s logo superimposed on it. In the foreground, there is a waitress standing in a diner setting, holding a glass of orange juice and presenting a menu. The waitress on the cover is portrayed by Kate Murtagh, an American actress known for her work in television and film during the 1970s and 1980s.

Although the name of the waitress on the album cover is not explicitly mentioned, she has been identified as “Libby”. Her pose is reminiscent of the Statue of Liberty, with her arm raised and the orange acting as a substitute for the torch; the tablet (tabula ansata) replaced by a diner menu.

“Libby” was portrayed by actress and, Kate Murtagh

“The Logical Song” is my personal favorite from the album. It was released as a single in 1979. The song was written by the band’s co-founder Roger Hodgson, who also provided lead vocals for the track. The song’s introspective lyrics and catchy melody, combined with the album’s memorable cover art, contributed to its enduring popularity.

“The Logical Song” and the album “Breakfast in America” marked a significant commercial success for Supertramp, solidifying their status as one of the prominent rock bands of the late 1970s.

  • Celebrating 57 Years of Jimi Hendrix’s “Hey Joe”

On October 23, 1966, The Jimi Hendrix Experience recorded their iconic cover of “Hey Joe,” which would go on to become one of the most famous and influential rock songs of all time.

Listen to Hendrix’s iconic version of “Hey Joe” here:

    https://youtu.be/rXwMrBb2x1Q?si=ceSqAHPTeL2eeHie

The song was originally written and performed by folk rock singer Tim Rose, who claimed it to be his arrangement of a traditional song. However, Hendrix’s version, which featured his signature guitar playing and showmanship, quickly surpassed Rose’s in popularity.

Hendrix’s “Hey Joe” was released in December 1966 and became a hit in the UK, reaching the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart in January 1967. While it did not chart in the US, Hendrix’s version remains the most well-known version of the song and has been covered by countless artists over the years.

In addition to its commercial success, “Hey Joe” has also been praised by critics for its groundbreaking musical innovation. The song’s heavy guitar riffs, psychedelic soundscapes, and Hendrix’s electrifying performance helped to define the sound of hard rock and heavy metal.

“Hey Joe” is also notable for its cultural significance. The song’s lyrics, which tell the story of a man who kills his girlfriend and then flees, have been interpreted as a metaphor for the Vietnam War and the counterculture movement of the 1960s.

In Rolling Stone magazine’s recent, “The 250 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” Hendrix was listed as #1! While I don’t dispute this in general, the RS list was SO badly done, I consider these other Hendrix accolades may have more validity…at least to my mind… In 2000, Total Guitar magazine ranked Hendrix’s “Hey Joe” as the 13th greatest cover version of all time, and in 2009, VH1 named it the 22nd greatest hard rock song of all time. In 2010, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it No. 201 on their list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” (A much better RS list before AI!)

This week, as we celebrate the 57th anniversary of its recording, “Hey Joe” remains one of the most beloved and influential rock songs of all time. It is a testament to Hendrix’s genius and his ability to transform even the most familiar song into something truly unique and unforgettable.

  • Portrait of Tracy: Jaco Pastorius

“Portrait of Tracy” is a song by jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius from his self-titled debut album, released in 1976. The song is a solo bass composition dedicated to Pastorius’ daughter, Tracy. It showcases Pastorius’ virtuosic bass playing and innovative use of harmonics.

Pastorius was known for his groundbreaking approach to the electric bass, and “Portrait of Tracy” is a prime example of his unique style. The song features Pastorius playing melodic lines, chords, and harmonics simultaneously, creating a rich and intricate sound. He employs various techniques such as tapping, sliding, and harmonics to bring out the expressive qualities of the instrument.

“Portrait of Tracy” has become one of Jaco Pastorius’ signature compositions and is highly regarded among bass players and jazz enthusiasts. The piece not only demonstrates his technical mastery but also his ability to convey emotion and create beautiful melodies on the bass guitar.

If you’re looking to listen to “Portrait of Tracy,” I recommend checking out Jaco Pastorius’ self-titled album, where you can find the original recording of the song. There are also numerous covers and interpretations of the piece by other bassists, highlighting its lasting influence in the world of bass playing.

  • Sinéad O’Connor: Born Dec 8, 1966, Gone at the age of 56 (July 26, 2023)

Sinéad O’Connor was an Irish singer-songwriter who rose to fame in the late 1980s and early 1990s with her unique voice and powerful lyrics. She was best known for her hit song “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which became an international success and earned her numerous awards and nominations.

    Video Tribute https://youtube.com/shorts/CDlp9JyXKyE?si=5ZABgmJW3VfFs9lL

Throughout her career, O’Connor was open about her struggles with mental illness, including bipolar disorder, and spoke out about the stigmatization of mental health issues. She was also known for her controversial actions and outspoken nature, which often landed her in the media spotlight.

Despite facing early difficulties in her life, including a difficult childhood and time spent in a Magdalene asylum, Sinead O’Connor found success with her music and released numerous albums over the course of her career.

In more recent years, she became better known for her spiritualism and activism and spoke publicly about her mental health struggles. In 2007, Sinead O’Connor told Oprah Winfrey that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder four years previously and that before her diagnosis she had struggled with thoughts of suicide and overwhelming fear. She said at the time that medication had helped her find more balance, but “it’s a work in progress”. Sinead O’Connor had also voiced support for other young women performers facing intense public scrutiny, including Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus.

The singer converted to Islam in 2018 and changed her name to Shuhada Sadaqat, though continued to perform under the name Sinéad O’Connor. • Ozzy Osbourne: Diary of an Icon

Ozzy Osbourne, born John Michael Osbourne in Birmingham, England on December 3, 1948, rose to fame in the 1970s as the lead vocalist of the pioneering heavy metal band Black Sabbath.

The group developed a grinding, ominous sound, based on the blues but intensely amplified, and drew attention with its tendency to reference the occult in its lyrics. In February 1970, Black Sabbath, originally called “Earth”, released its eponymous first album and quickly developed a following in both Britain and the United States. The band released albums each year through the mid-1970s, except for 1974. After the tour for Never Say Die (1978), Osbourne left the band due to his drug and alcohol abuse.

A period of despair and drug abuse led to Osbourne’s divorce from his first wife, Thelma Mayfair. He then met and married Sharon Arden, who encouraged him to start a career as a solo artist. His first effort was Blizzard of Ozz (1980), which was a multiplatinum success, thanks in part to the standout single “Crazy Train,” and was followed by the equally popular Diary of a Madman (1981), which sold more than five million copies.

A defining moment in Osbourne’s career came on the tour for the album, when, thinking that someone in the audience had thrown him a rubber toy, Osbourne bit off the head of a live bat.

Despite announcing his retirement in 1992, Osbourne continued recording through the decade. Ozzfest, an annual summer music festival featuring heavy metal acts organized by Osbourne and his wife, began in 1996 and toured throughout the United States and, in some years, parts of Europe. By the end of the 1990s, Osbourne had reunited the original members of Black Sabbath for a new album and tour, and in 1999 the band won a Grammy for best metal performance for the song “Iron Man.”

In March 2006, Osbourne and the members of Black Sabbath were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2013 Osbourne made his first studio record, 13, with Black Sabbath after a 35-year absence.

In addition to his music career, Ozzy Osbourne has occasionally acted, playing himself or a comparable rock star in several movies and lent his voice to a few animated features. He has also been a popular television personality, appearing in several reality shows, including “The Osbournes,” which chronicled the lives of his family members. The hugely popular show ran until 2005, and the family later starred in other reality series focused on paranormal investigations.

He recently canceled his upcoming concerts because he was “not physically capable” of the traveling required to tour, due to a serious spinal injury suffered four years earlier. The 74-year-old rocker was also diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in early 2020.

“It’s PRKN 2,” said his wife, Sharon. “There’s so many different types of Parkinson’s; it’s not a death sentence by any stretch of the imagination, but it does affect certain nerves in your body. And it’s — it’s like you have a good day, a good day, and then a really bad day.”

He said: “My original plan was to return to the stage in the summer of 2024, and when the offer to do this show came in, I optimistically moved forward.”

The Power Trip festival reposted Ozzy’s statement, but has not yet announced his replacement act. The lineup currently includes iconic rock bands similar to Black Sabbath like Guns N’ Roses and Iron Maiden.

Despite his health issues, Osbourne remains a cultural icon and one of the most influential figures in the history of heavy metal.

  • Women in Music: Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel Born Nov 14, 1805

Fanny Cäcilie Mendelssohn was born on November 14, 1805, in Hamburg, Germany. Fanny Mendelssohn, known as Fanny Hensel after marriage, was a highly talented musician and composer in the 19th century, but due to the gender norms of the time, she was unable to fully pursue her career in music. Despite this, she still managed to make a significant impact on the music world.

Despite her short life ending at only 41 years of age, Fanny Hensel wrote over 460 pieces in her lifetime, including works for piano, chamber ensembles, vocal music, and orchestral music.

Her output was prolific and varied, and she was known for her expressive lyricism and inventive harmonies. Despite the challenges she faced as a female composer in the 19th century, Fanny Hensel left a lasting legacy in the world of classical music, and her works continue to be admired and performed today.

Each month this year, conductor and pianist, Eva Meitner is sharing recordings of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel’s Das Jaar.
    Watch/Listen here: https://youtube.com/@EvaMeitner

Some of Fanny Hensel’s most famous compositions include:

    1. Das Jahr (The Year): a cycle of 12 character pieces for piano, written in 1841. Each piece is meant to represent a month of the year and is filled with rich harmonies and melodic lines.
    2. Piano Trio in D minor: a chamber work for piano, violin, and cello, written in 1847. It is known for its dramatic and emotional qualities.
    3. Songs for Voice and Piano: Fanny Mendelssohn wrote over 120 songs for voice and piano, including “Italien” and “Lieder ohne Worte” (Songs without Words).
    4. String Quartet in E-flat major: This is a chamber work for two violins, viola, and cello, written in 1834. It is a beautifully crafted piece with intricate textures and soaring melodies.
    5. Overture in C major: This is an orchestral work written in 1830. It is a lively and energetic piece with a memorable main theme.
Our Mind on Music: Episodes 11 – 13 feature Fanny Hensel and her brother, Felix Mendelssohn

One of the most notable aspects of Fanny Hensel’s career is that many of her compositions were published under her brother Felix Mendelssohn’s name. This is likely due to the fact that at the time, it was considered inappropriate for a woman to have her music published under her own name. It is believed that Fanny herself may have been complicit in this arrangement, as it allowed her to have her music heard and recognized by audiences.

    Angela Mace Christian

In 2010, a Duke University student, Angela Mace (Angela Mace Christian), was able to prove that the “Ostersonate” (Easter Sonata) for piano, previously believed to have been composed by Felix Mendelssohn had actually been composed by Fanny. This, among other factors has raised suspicion that there may be other pieces by Fanny Hensel that were published under her brother, Feliz’s, name. This has been difficult to verify as much of her music was not properly documented or preserved. However, there have been efforts in recent years to rediscover and promote Fanny Hensel’s music, and she is now beginning to receive the recognition she deserves as a brilliant composer in her own right.

    The Easter Sonata

Despite the fact that many of her works were published under her brother’s name, Fanny Hensel’s music is now recognized as having its own unique style and voice. Her works are known for their lyricism and emotional depth, and many of them have become beloved pieces in the classical repertoire.

Fanny Cäcilie Mendelssohn Bartholdy Hensel died on May 14, 1847, at the age of 41. She had suffered a stroke, which was likely the result of the stress and strain of her busy musical career and personal life. Her death was a great loss to the music world, but her legacy continues to live on through her many wonderful compositions.

  • Billy Strayhorn: A Key Thread in the Tapestry of Jazz

Billy Strayhorn is one of the greatest composers in the history of jazz. He is best known for his nearly 30-year partnership with jazz legend, Duke Ellington. Stayhorn/Ellington compositions feature such classics as “Take the A Train,” “Satin Doll”, and “Lotus Blossom.”

Strayhorn joined Ellington’s band in 1939, at the age of twenty four, and by the end of the year Strayhorn had become essential to the Duke Ellington Band; arranging, composing, and even sitting-in at the piano.

    Take the A Train

Strayhorn’s contribution to Duke Ellington’s music was unmistakable. In fact, his work as a composer became so intertwined with Ellington’s over time, that it was said that eventually neither man could distinguish his own contributions from their joint work. The two worked closely on major concert works, such as “Deep South Suite” (1947) and the “Shakespearean Suite”/“Such Sweet Thunder” (1957), an arrangement of the “Nutcracker Suite” (1960) and the “Peer Gynt Suite” (1962). Strayhorn and Ellington’s innovative melodies, lyrics, and orchestrations have contributed greatly to the sound of modern jazz.

    Peer Gynt Suite (1962)

Billy Strayhorn succumb to battle with cancer in 1967. He was only 51. Ellington’s response to his death was to record what some consider his greatest work, a collection called “And His Mother Called Him Bill,” consisting entirely of Billy’s compositions. Later, a scholarship fund was established for him by Ellington and the Julliard School of Music. Finally in 1997, 30 years after his death, Billy Strayhorn’s family established “Billy Strayhorn Songs, Inc.”; a new publishing company that has reclaimed and registered Billy Strayhorn’s music posthumously: And His Mother Called Him Bill (1968)

    GrimRock EP: Debut Release
GrimRock’s first release, the GrimRock EP, was released on December 17, 2021. This EP takes listeners on a journey through various moods and phases. GrimRock, also known as Joel ‘Grim’ Hartsek, handles all aspects of the music, including vocals and mixing, while collaborating with lyricist, and longtime friend, M. Anthony Kushak. Kushak’s book of lyrics, “The Interstellar is in the Cellar” is the source for the lyrics in this project. The result is a collection of songs that resonate with the raw energy and dark aesthetic that define GrimRock’s unique style.

    GrimRock’s Second Release
GrimRock presented his second release on April 29, 2022. This album features lyrics and music by Grim, and another collaboration for the track “City,” which features lyrics by Matthew R. Oyster. With a digital booklet accompanying the album, listeners are invited to delve deeper into the artistic vision behind each song.

    G.R.5: The Latest Chapter
GrimRock’s latest release, G.R.5, hit the airwaves on October 28, 2023. This album represents a new chapter in GrimRock’s musical journey, showcasing his continued growth and exploration as an artist. Collaborating with lyricist Angel Vaow and artist Melvin Crockett, the album presents a collection of powerful and captivating alternative rock songs. A Touching Tribute and a New Chapter

Among GrimRock’s recent releases is the emotionally charged bonus track, “My Friend,” which will appear on his upcoming album, G.R.5. Dedicated to his father, who was also a musician, this track holds special significance. The outro of the song features his father’s voice, which hadn’t been heard since his passing in 2006. While it remains a poignant and difficult piece for Grim to listen to, it serves as a touching tribute to his father’s musical legacy.

GrimRock, ‘The Pennsylvania Purveyor of Rock,’ has established himself as one to watch (and listen to) in the alternative rock scene. From his debut EP to his upcoming G.R.5, GrimRock continues to captivate listeners with his raw energy, gothic flair, and evocative storytelling. Keep an eye on this Pittsburgh-powered musician as he continues to make waves with his own unique approach to music and interaction with his audience.
